The church is a few hundred years old, and the walls are beautiful with paintings and craft works on the walls, and you can feel a true spiritual experience The church is very old and said to have been constructed by believers who fled from Thirukochi. Later on they settled here forever and constructed the church. It is how the name "Pazhanji" [similar to the Malayalam word for "old"] came into being for the place .
The ancestors of Pazhanji Church were earlier belonged to Kunnamkulam Arthat Church. The first chapel was founded in Pazhanji, was in the name of Geeverghese Sahadha and it was situated in the northern side of the present Church. The chapel founded in the southern side was by the Kakkaseril family. This chapel still continues with its traditional glory in the southern side of the old Church. Both the Churches are dedicated to St.Mary. The burial ceremony in the present semitary was started during the period of Parumala Mar Gregorios Metropolitan. It is believed that the Semitary was in the northern side of the present Church in the past
